How to prevent the development of tomatoes top rot?

14 Jul 2023

Top rot appears on different varieties of tomatoes, but more often such type of tomatoes like plums begin to get sick.

Top rot is not caused by fungi or bacteria. This disease is simply physiological. Although top rot provokes the development of infectious diseases.

This disease occurs due to a lack of calcium in the soil, as well as problems with the mobilization of calcium into the plant cells.

For example, when the soil is sandy, most elements are washed out very quickly and the plant begins to feel a lack of nutrition.

As a result dark spots appear on the lower side of the fruit and then it causes a lot of diseases. The other reason is also various mineral fertilizers that displace potassium and phosphorus from the soil. Lack of watering also leads to top rot.

So, how to prevent top rot?

First of all, before planting, put some amount of ash in the planting holes, because it contains all necessary elements, including calcium. By the way, ash can be added between rows.

Don’t forget about calcium which is also a very good organic fertilizer

You can also use Live Fertilizer Organic-Balance®, which will provide phosphorus and potassium mobilization and nitrogen fixation. Be sure that Organic-Balance® will not displace useful calcium from the soil.

And one more important thing - to save moisture you should mulch tomatoes!
